Unfinished, no longer


It was probably January 2012. I saw this beautiful magazine cover photograph, and challenged myself to sketch it out. I took the help of my art teacher to get the facial proportions right and began working on the fabric. And then, somewhere down the line, I abandoned the sketch. I cannot recall why. I occasionally looked at it with disappointment. Over a year and a half later, I unearthed it from the depths of my cupboard.

I promised to spend a little time on it as often as possible. First the face, then the hair, then the finishing… It was test of my patience, and I almost lost it, as I quickly filled in the colours. And here it is, at long last, a former unfinished portrait, now complete.

A Very Happy Deepavali


We hadn’t really planned on making a rangoli this year. It isn’t something we do traditionally.

All that changed, however, when a close friend of mine sent me a photograph of a beautiful rangoli she had made with her sister.

My cousin and I went shopping for colours, and with the help of my mother, drew a rangoli together.

Wishing you all a very very happy and prosperous (and hopefully cracker-free) Deepavali.

Designing the year – Newsletters


As the last few hours bring the curtains down on the year, here’s the last in the series of my recap of the year. Like the previous two posts in this series, this one too will focus on my work with the Alumni Association.

Designing for specific events allowed me to satisfy my creative hunger. But it was the newsletters, which really challenged me. We had to deliver an issue every month, and there were many months when we didn’t make it in time. The design had its teething problems, and there were some months when we were struggling for content.

Eventually though, we managed to get the content and design in order. And it took no less than nine months of experimenting with the layout and features.

Of the twelve issues we pulled this year, October was the blockbuster of the year (at least for me). I had the most fun working on this one – I got the chance to play the designer, illustrator, content writer, as well as the editor – and we sent it on time!

So here it is, in all its glory – Issue #10. I hope you like it as much as I do.

We mixed up the traditional white stone Kolam powder with colourful Rangoli powders to create a small message. A couple of shots of our little decoration for this year’s Diwali…
