Year 2014 Round Up

Every year, our newspaper brings out a compilation of the major events of 2014 in the form of a supplement. It makes for an interesting read, and I quite look forward to it. This past month though, I decided to try out my own abridged version of the round-up.

This compilation was part of the monthly newsletter which is mailed to the members of my college’s Alumni Association. I quite enjoyed creating this, and am quite happy with the way it came out. I hope you enjoy it, as much as I enjoyed making it.

The entire compilation, with a full credit list can be viewed and downloaded in a printable PDF format here: Glimpses from 2014 glyphicons_200_download.

The file is 1.7 MB, which may, or may not be heavy for you. In case you decide to print it, I’d love to see how it looks! And of course, you are free to share it. After all, sharing is the best form of flattery 😉

Designing the year – Newsletters

As the last few hours bring the curtains down on the year, here’s the last in the series of my recap of the year. Like the previous two posts in this series, this one too will focus on my work with the Alumni Association.

Designing for specific events allowed me to satisfy my creative hunger. But it was the newsletters, which really challenged me. We had to deliver an issue every month, and there were many months when we didn’t make it in time. The design had its teething problems, and there were some months when we were struggling for content.

Eventually though, we managed to get the content and design in order. And it took no less than nine months of experimenting with the layout and features.

Of the twelve issues we pulled this year, October was the blockbuster of the year (at least for me). I had the most fun working on this one – I got the chance to play the designer, illustrator, content writer, as well as the editor – and we sent it on time!

So here it is, in all its glory – Issue #10. I hope you like it as much as I do.

With best wishes for a happy and prosperous New Year, thank you for sticking around 🙂 See you in 2014!

Designing the year – Invitations

As we count down to the new year, I recap the year almost gone by.

Being a member of the Alumni Association of my college, I had a lot of design work on my plate. The last post covered posters from the year. In this post,  a couple of e-invitations I designed for the events organised by the Association.

Letter To Unniyarcha

I suppose,
Somewhere in Heaven,

18 September 2012

Dear Unniyarcha,

I hope you don’t mind the informal salutation. Even though we have never met, somehow, I feel that you would not mind being addressed in this manner. I have heard about you, though I must admit, my knowledge is rather limited.

Last week, I began taking part in the weekly writing challenge. For this week, I decided to write a letter to you. Let me introduce myself. I live in the 21st century. My home is several miles away from where you lived, but both our homes are part of the same country. We no longer have kings and queens, but we still have wars. The conflicts in our society are very similar to the conflicts during your lifetime.

You are a source of great inspiration to me, and over the past several months, I have been busy trying to create something – based on you. I am writing to you, because I wish to share my vision with you.

In your time, there were sculptors and painters who created such wonderful works of art, puppeteers who breathed life into inanimate objects, magicians who created wonderful illusions, actors, dancers and musicians who recreated dramas on stage. In our time, we still have these art forms, but some people have invented new media, and many of these wonderful arts can be performed within something called a ‘computer’.

I am still a student, and trying to learn new things. In my school, I tried to implement what I learnt, to create a character. If you were to be reborn, in our times, this is what I believe you might be. A seemingly ordinary girl – but one who has an extensive knowledge of Kalaripayattu. Simple, confident, friendly, strong and respected.

I had a rather tough time, and at times I felt rather unpleasant, wondering if I could really conquer the challenge I had set for myself. I took up sole responsibility, and in hindsight, I think it was not a very wise thing to do. Nevertheless, I accomplished a part of what I set out to do. The character has her flaws, and will probably always remain a work-in-progress – aren’t all humans! But I am satisfied with what I managed.

I hope someday she gets to meet you, and gets an opportunity to learn something from you. I thank you for patiently reading this letter. I hope it wasn’t much of an inconvenience. I am enclosing some photographs of the girl. I hope you like them.

yours truly,

Kasturika

Unniyarcha is a popular legendary warrior, believed to have lived in the 16th century. She was an expert at wielding the Urumi.

Urumi is a long sword made of flexible steel, sharp enough to cut into flesh, but flexible enough to be rolled into a tight coil. It is dangerous to the opponents and wielders alike, and requires great agility and skill to master.

Kalaripayattu is one of the oldest fighting systems in existence. It is believed that the Buddhist monk Bodhidharma travelled from the southern part of India and taught martial arts to the monks at Shaolin Temple. The origin of Shaolin Kung Fu is attributed to the ancient Indian martial art systems.

Assignments!

I recently submitted my assignments for internal assessment (3D modelling, texturing and lighting). Here are the renders – the wire-frame, ambient occlusion, beauty pass, and composite. They have all been made using real images as references. The chocolate box took the most effort, and is, by far, the most original of the lot. Hope you enjoy!

Weaving colours

Colours are in the air. Quite literally! And they’ve spilled on my work!

Over the weekend, I happened to get the opportunity to design something for an organisation named Threads and Weaves. I’m not sure what it would be called technically, but I’ll refer to it as a mailer.

One of my teachers once said, ‘While designing, don’t play holi!’. Stick to a few colours that go well together. I’m not sure this mailer really sticks to that rule. One of my few works that have had lots of colours.

I changed some images from the original so that I could upload it. The images featured here belong to Ms Anudeep Virdi (my employer!). Published with permission.

Something that kept me a little busy

As has been the case for a very long time, my brother offered me another set of assignments.

The first assignment was to design a visiting card, and the second, a web page for himself.

Visiting Card
The Visiting Card

As usual, I didn’t have much clue as to what to do. The visiting card had to be in single colour (due to budget constraints). I decided to use th Fibonacci Golden Spiral as well as the photographer’s rule of third’s as a backdrop, with a golden yellow colour scheme.

The printed version
The Printed Version Looked Something Like This

But the printer had other ideas and refused to print the cards (on technical grounds) :P. So my brother decided to print them at home on cream coloured card paper in black ink. So it finally ended up looking something like this (colours look a little different in print).

For the webpage, I put in a slideshow of some of his best photographs (the ones that appealed to me the most) over a grungy background. I used a background provided by a very generous lady named Brenda Clarke.

Here’s a screen shot of how it appears in the web browser. It has been uploaded to the web server and can be viewed here.

That’s it for now… Cheers 🙂

Going Retro!

A little something I created with a help of a few friends 🙂 (read people who are willing to give a way stuff for free over the internet)

About a month back, I got another assignment from my brother (as usual, he’s the one giving me work :D). He was working on his office magazine and there was a section called ‘newbies’. So he shot a few photographs of each of the newbies in funky poses and told me to give it a retro kind of look.

I searched over the internet and downloaded a few brushes (short cut I hear?) and used them to create a 70’s type of background. Not sure if it really looks like the 70’s. Here’s a sample page with space for an introduction/short history of the person featured.

The brush-set I used is called Grunge Vectors by Circle of Fire. Deviant Art is a really great resource for all things artistic. The amazing quality of work that people give away for free is really really unbelievable.

The photograph I’ve used for this particular sample has been taken by someone who goes by the Flickr username of Alagos, and who was willing to put his photographs under the creative commons licence. So here’s credit to the photographer who took this very cute photograph (I couldn’t use original photographs of the newbies for lack of permission).

I’ve also used a lot of the spatter brushes (same as the ones I used for the Holi card) for the background.

That’s it for now 🙂
